Description
The routine calculations of atomic nuclei within Energy-Density Functionals (EDF), such as Skyrme or Gogny, usually don't count with electrons, which however tend to be bound to the experimentally measured nuclei. Besides total electron binding energy, which is indeed subtracted in the modern fits of EDF parametrizations, we should also scrutinize the fact that the inner electron orbitals within superheavy nuclei overlap significantly with the nucleus, and it may become important to account for their shielding effect on the proton-proton interaction in the calculation of nuclear binding energy (and the related energy differences in alpha and beta decay). To properly investigate this point, we will utilize a Dirac-Fock code, constructed with a special care given on the precise numerical evaluation of direct and exchange Coulomb integrals from the interior of nucleus (utilizing the actual proton distribution) up to the boundary of the atom, with possibility to add also muons. The calculated electron (and muon) density is then employed in the nuclear EDF to estimate the effect on nuclear binding energy. The tools developed in this effort are fully relevant also for the muonic atom spectroscopy, which is a subject of reviving attention.
