Description
This presentation highlights recent theoretical investigations on the octupole and hexadecapole correlations, and related collective excitations in medium-heavy and heavy nuclei in the interacting boson model that is based on the microscopic nuclear density functional theory. Octupole correlations are shown to play an important role in predicting low-energy collective states and the relevant E2 and E3 transition rates in a large number of actinide, rare-earth, and lanthanide nuclei with nucleons numbers close to 56, 88, and 136 and in the N~Z~34 nuclei, in which triaxiality and coexistence of quadrupole shapes are also present. The hexadecapole degree of freedom is shown to have impacts on the systematic of the energy spectra, E2 and E4 transition strengths in nearly spherical and deformed rare-earth nuclei.
